Beatrice’s family just wanted what was best for her, but no one could agree on what that was. We stepped in to make sure the final say would ultimately be from Beatrice.
88-year-old Beatrice was very lonely in her large family, having strained relationships with each of her 5 children. After being diagnosed with dementia she insisted on staying in her home, the only place she’s ever felt truly comfortable. Her daughter, Jane, lived next door and honored her wishes but added the extra precaution of cameras being installed in the home to monitor her safety. She tried to check in as much as possible on the monitors, but her full-time job and children of her own kept her busy.
Beatrice’s son, Daniel, did not agree with Jane’s methods and attempted to move his mother to an assisted living community without consulting his siblings. This created a legal battle between the siblings, and it was around this time that I was called to help. Ultimately, they all just wanted what was best for their mother, but everyone disagreed about how to go about that. I stepped in to find Beatrice an attorney who would serve as her professional guardian, that way the final say would ultimately be hers.
We found a way to have Beatrice live at home safely without any need for intervention or monitoring from her children. A care manager was hired to assess Beatrice’s well-being on a weekly basis and provide reports to the professional guardian, manage her medications, arrange all medical appointments, accompany her to medical appointments, and supervise the private caregivers hired by Jane to fill in the gaps between weekly check-ins.
